preparing for earth-based simple living

The Gospel of Thomas reflects the consciousness underlying an earth-based way of life: `If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.` The realisation that there`s more to life than slaving away our precious moments, serving the intellect, is the first step towards releasing ourselves from the prison warder's mindset that has dominated for centuries. Taking responsibility for our lives and living our truth is the most liberating experience one can have. Years of conditioning from all sides ' from formal education, institutionalised religion and the media ' have taught us that the answer lies without. That someone or something on the outside will save us and show us the way. This has become so ingrained in our consciousness that we rarely think twice about handing over our decision-making power to 'authority' figures, whether these be government, employers or even the latest trends.

taking steps

The time has come for us to delve into the depths of our hearts and bring out that which truly serves us, namely our spirit of transformation. Transformation into the human beings we have always aspired to become, but rarely had the time to reflect upon and create. The second step is acknowledging one's part in creating that which surrounds us. As individuals we have created or chosen, either consciously or unconsciously, the conditions we find ourselves in. The job, the house, the partner and kids are all ultimate manifestations of the desires we carry within ourselves. Taking silent time to re-align with our heart`s desire and remove ourselves from the befogging static of life in the 'system' is vital to clear the negative thoughts and patterns that no longer serve us. Releasing yourself from all that does not serve your new path is the third step. Consider what you truly need ' and toss the rest! A sense of abundance can only come from within. Letting go of attachments relating to material possessions and personal prestige goes a long way towards cultivating inner peace. This creates opportunities for giving to others, which directly serves the spirit. For it is in giving that we truly receive.

a harmonic process

If the choice is made to move towards living closer to the earth, it is only natural to want to align one`s personal `laws` with those of Nature. Through considering the Law of Reciprocal Action for instance, one can set the tone for the unfolding journey. The message is clear in the quote: `As you sow, so shall you reap.' Below are practical actions that will smooth the way towards harmonious living for all:

reduce, re-use, recycle, re-think.

Consider the life-cycle of everything you use. Appreciate that nothing ever disappears. Throwing something 'away' only makes it someone else`s responsibility.

cut animal products from your diet.

Use of animal products is one of the leading causes of environmental destruction and health complications on the planet today.
take the handmade pledge.
Strive to buy only handmade, local and organic products. By supporting local initiatives we support each other and our environment, and withdraw power from large industries that exploit life.

consider the whole.

Before making a decision, consider the following: What would happen if the whole of humanity did the same? Would it prove beneficial or harmful?

embrace the silence.

Give yourself silent time for meditation. Through meditation we can clear old conditionings. Surrender to the silence and listen to the subtle secrets nature offers those who listen.

breathe green.

Commune with nature ... take off your shoes, feel the breeze, appreciate the sunlight. Moving towards earth-based living can transform every cell of one`s being. Some see the journey as an harmonic process of re-aligning with the natural rhythms of nature, while others dismiss it as a return to 'primitive' living. The choice lies with the individual. This path requires hard work and dedication ' working to actualise one`s dream always does. In my experience though, it is worth every moment, every thought, and every breath. Peace Be With You. Always.
