the harm of irradiated food

We the public are constantly subjected to practices that are inadequately researched. A technique is introduced into the public domain because it seems like a good idea, it is easy to implement, and profitable. Research is often rushed through. Cautions by specialists are overlooked as the benefits are thought to outweigh the risks (which take time to develop).

Irradiation of foods kills living organisms present on the food items, and makes the food sterile for longer storage. However if the irradiation kills organisms on the food, what does it do to the living cells of the food? The high level of radiation can produce free radicals in the food and change the structure of the food in subtle ways. Besides the carcinogenic effects, vitamin /mineral content is also affected negatively. Research in animal models warns us about the problem, and yet government regulating bodies continue to allow this practice.
