Non-profit organisation, Mamelani Projects hosted their own 'Move for Health Day, Saturday, May 6th, 2011 at the Chris Campbell Memorial field in Khayelitsha.
The initiative was conceptualised by the World Health Organisation's Global 'Move for Health Day' which was celebrated on May, 2nd, 2011. The aim of the initiative is to raise awareness on the importance of exercise to improve your health. Mamelani's community-based health education programme allows women to attend workshops that focus on increasing health literacy so that they are better equipped to take care of their own health and the health of their families.
Women of all ages came to the Chris Campbell Memorial field to participate in a range of games and activities, including; hula hoops, skipping ropes, sack races, relay races and musical chairs. The day ended off with a 'dancathon', where women were given the chance to show off their dance moves, competing with one another and at the same time getting some exercise. About 66 of the women who attended had the opportunity to get their blood pressure tested for free, thanks to the Heart and Stroke Foundation who were on site and ready to assist at all times.
'The event was a huge success! We were so pleased to see how excited and eager attendees were to participate from the get -go. All participants received a good workout whilst having fun. We would like to thank all volunteers who helped, as well as all the participants who made it a memorable day', Says Mamelani Projects, Founding Director, Carly Tanur.
