Building a better future for under privileged schools

Cool upcycling projects brought home the value of waste in creative ways at Redhill school during a collaboration with Green Beings over 3 days.

The initial workshop was supposed to be held at the Cosmo City schools, however due to the recent unrest in Cosmo City the workshops were conducted at Redhill school.

Grade 10 learners built chairs from old tyres and 38 vegetable boxes out of old pallets, before creating signs for the recycling depots at the Cosmo City schools. On the last day of the workshops learners participated in a mini River Rehab at Morningside river. Learners were surprised to find unusual objects along the river banks and also tested the quality of the river by using Mini SASS.

We chose projects where learners can experience up-cycling (using waste items to make valuable objects) and planting so that they can learn about and appreciate growing their own food as well as understand the value of waste.

Green Beings will assist in finishing the projects up at the Cosmo City schools. 3 more vegetable gardens are to be installed, 2 compost structures as well as an indigenous vertical garden made out of 2L plastic bottles.

The various different sustainbility projects mentioned above will greatly benefit the Cosmo City schools. The vegetable tunnels will supplement the feeding scheme which will ensure nutricious meals for learners, the compost will assist the vegetable tunnel in creating healthier soil and the up-cycled tyre chairs and vertical garden out of 2L plastic bottles will showcase giving waste a new value.

The importance of showing learners the value of waste is in-valuable. Redhill learners will come to Cosmo City towards the end of the year to see the project completed. We commend schools that encourage learners to participate in practial training that enhances knowledge and practical skills to create an environment that is better for all.

All of this would not have been possible if the learners weren’t so enthusiastic and keen to assist under-privileged schools by fundraising the money for the projects.
