Title: | Environmental Law for Sustainability Course |
When: | 01.08.2012 |
Location: | Cape Town |
Description: | Is your business compliant? How environmentally compliant is your organisation? Totally? Partly? Or, are you actually not sure? As we move into the Green Economy environmental regulations and standards are being more strictly applied, and are fast moving beyond compliance towards integrative sustainability practices such as Governance for Transparency. Is your business up-to-date with environmental compliance & auditing legislation for sustainability? EnAct International & icologie This course is presented as a collaboration between EnAct International and icologie. EnAct is an environmental law and policy consultancy that specialises in developing and strengthening governance systems that promote ecologically sustainable societies. Founded in London in 1994, EnAct is now based in Cape Town, South Africa with offices in both the Mother City and Durban. Together with their sister law firm Cullinan & Associates Inc, a specialist firm that provides legal services to clients in the Green Economy, EnAct are committed to developing better ways for humans to govern themselves so that we all can enjoy a viable future within healthy ecosystems. Why should you do the course? We simply cannot ignore the damaging effects of our actions on the environment – avoiding it is a significant risk to the sustainability of your business. Reducing pollution and rehabilitating ecosystem damage, negative publicity, fines, court cases … these will all be obviously costly for you. Complying is an opportunity to look at new efficient ways of operating your organisation and a way to save money. Adapting to climate change (drought and flood especially), reducing carbon emissions, saving energy, protecting water supplies, and conserving biodiversity are all being prioritised in global and South African legislation. It is vital to know what laws exist, how they affect your particular business and what laws you can expect to comply with in the near future. With Environmental Law moving into the realm of Sustainability Law, all organisations are being required to operate much stronger ethical and transparent practices – can you imagine a World where businesses have nothing to hide? By taking full responsibility for managing the ecological and social impact of operations, your business can become part of the sustainability solution, not the problem. The reality is that many businesses are not compliant with environmental legislation. Environmental compliance & auditing too is often reactive and crisis managed, and doesn’t necessarily change the environmentally damaging practices from occurring in a business. This is where transparency in your business operations is needed, which can lead to proactive management and sustainable change. What can you expect? We teach the basics of Environmental Compliance & Auditing in South Africa and importantly how to move your business beyond ”rules & tools” to the transparent “principles & process” of Sustainability Law. The course – an intensive 1-day workshop - combines environmental law jurisprudence (environmental law as developed by the courts), Constitutional Law, the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA), and international compliance standards such as ISO14001 with the emerging fields of Sustainability Law and Governance for Transparency. We allow you to explore the concepts and test your understanding with others on the course in an open-space format.
