Only by learning more, can we impart more information to learners and the public. Life, Jobs and Food security affects everyone! So be part of making a difference! What is MCEN? The Marine and Coastal Educators Network were established in February 2000 under the auspices of SANCOR and functions as the co-ordinating body for marine and coastal education in South Africa. Anyone who teaches others, adults or children, about the sea or the coast is involved in marine and coastal education. This includes teachers involved in formal education, educators at aquariums, educators and managers in conservation agencies, private educators and marine scientists running awareness programmes, educators in non- government organizations and those working for the government, amongst others. What does MCEN do? • Hosts an Annual National Conference, • Combines the Conference with ‘hands-on’ activities to expose delegates to experiences in the area where the conference is held, • Facilitates Regional Workshops or Mini Conferences in each region on an annual basis, • Co-ordinates National Marine Week activities in October every year, • Contributes to the SANCOR Newsletter, • Facilitates reciprocal visits between member organizations, • Maintains a database of marine and coastal educators in South Africa, Aims of MCEN: • Identify future opportunities for marine education in South Africa, • Facilitates collaboration between educators, • Assist marine educators in their activities, to make sure that they remain within the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement of the National Curriculum. CAPS is a single, comprehensive, and concise policy document, which will replace the current Subject and Learning Area Statements, Learning Programme Guidelines and Subject Assessment Guidelines for all the subjects listed in the National Curriculum Statement for Grades R - 12. • Help to bridge the gap between marine scientists, resource managers and the public at large. • MCEN activities are guided by a MCEN Steering Committee: |
