Title: Global Day of Action
When: 16.11.2013
Location: everywhere
Description: The Global Day of Action (or GDA) is the collective name given to all the organisations, groups and individuals around the world who come together for the Global Day of Action on climate. It has occurred every year since 2005 at the time of the annual United Nations Talks on climate change (the COP or "Conference of Parties" to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change or UNFCCC). People from all around the world have come together on the same day to demand urgent action on climate, and climate justice, from the governments of the world meeting at the annual climate talks. Obviously it's not possible for thousands of people from all around the world to come together literally in the same place so the Global Day of Action has consisted of demonstrations and events all around the world on the same day - or as near as possible to that as circumstances allow. Usually that day has been the Saturday midway through the climate talks.
More on the history of the GDA here.

A Call for Action

“We demand that world leaders take the urgent and resolute action that is needed to prevent the catastrophic destabilisation of global climate, so that the entire world can move as rapidly as possible to a stronger emissions reductions treaty which is both equitable and effective in minimising dangerous climate change.

We demand that the long-industrialised countries that have emitted most greenhouse gases currently in the atmosphere take responsibility for climate change mitigation by immediately reducing their own emissions as well as investing in a clean energy revolution in the developing world. Developed countries must take their fair share of the responsibility to pay for the adaptive measures that have to be taken, especially by low-emitting countries with limited economic resources.

Climate change will hit the poorest first and hardest. All who have the economic means to act, must therefore urgently and decisively do so.”

Who is involved?

Over 100 countries and even more organisations have already taken part in the GDA. To check the list and what they have organised in the past, please check our dedicated website here.

How to organise your own action

As you see from the above you can do an action with just a few friends or alternatively just your organisation acting alone. It's never too late to get something organised. Make sure you take some photos and we will publicise them on the global website. But try and get into your local media too!

Better than acting with just a few, or with a single organisation doing all the work, though, is to get others involved. Try holding a meeting to organise for the 'Global Day of Action' and invite other people and organisations. You might be able to set up some kind of 'Organising Committee' for the Day of Action or a coalition of groups to organise perhaps not only for the Global Day of Action but also other climate-campaigning activities.

Coalitions on climate change have already been formed in various countries. Here are some examples below. Some of these are 'national' in scope, others just bring together a proportion of the organisations with an interest in campaigning on climate, within the country concerned. All of them demonstrate how people are coming together to fight against this greatest of threats to humanity.
