Climate change is fast-becoming a priority for future business-planning. Climate change considerations are driving a number of government's policy decisions. One has to look no further than the notion of sectoral carbon budgets in the National Climate Change Response White Paper (Department of Environmental Affairs, October 2011), to understand how far-reaching the climate imperative for business will be in the not-too-distant future. The idea of a "carbon budget" is to determine e.g., for a particular sector, the greenhouse gas emissions budget the sector is entitled to emit, and then to implement measures that will seek to restrict the sector's emissions to the "budget".

Another example of a climate-driven policy decision is the recent re-confirmation of the National Treasury's intention to impose a carbon tax on large emitters of greenhouse gas (Budget Review 2012). Against this background, this "Climate Change Business: Legal, Financing, Technical and Reporting" training course has been devised to prepare business and industry for a climate-influenced operational environment by:

Providing the essential intellectual background to understanding how climate change influences policy and regulatory determination at the international and domestic levels.
Explaining how South African domestic policy and regulation is evolving to take account of climate change issues.
Elaborating on some of the tools that business and industry will need to use in planning their response to the new economic challenges posed by climate change. Such tools include those for measuring and calculating carbon footprints and reporting on climate change within the broader context of sustainability reporting.
