Title: International Day Of Peace
When: 21.09.2012 11:00 - 12:00
Location: worldwide
Description: In 1981, the United Nations General Assembly declared that the opening day of its regular session in September "shall be officially dedicated and observed as the International Day of Peace and shall be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples" (resolution 36/67). It was in 2001 that the United Nations General Assembly adopted a new resolution stating 21 September will mark the International Day of Peace.

The celebration of this day is intended to have the entire world observing a day of peace and non-violence and all organisations and individuals are encouraged to celebrate this day in an appropriate manner.

To enhance the importance of this Day, a 24-hour vigil for peace and non-violence is held. This global 24-hour vigil aims to bring to our attention, the power of prayer and other spiritual observances in promoting peace and preventing violent conflict.

There is still a lot of conflict and tensions amongst people in South Africa and this day reminds us of our need to work together and put our differences behind us so that we can ensure a safer future for all citizens.

Debate whether you think that we are justified in spending enormous amounts of money on weapons of war, rather than on rehabilitating degraded ecosystems.
