Waddle YOU do for the African penguin in 2015?
Have you ever wanted to be part of something BIG? Well this may just be your lucky chance! Join our intrepid 2015 team –currently colonising to 16 – for the 5th annual Waddle for a Week which takes place 13th – 18th April. The team walk an easy 125 kms from Gansbaai to Simonstown over a period of 6 days.
The objectives of the campaign are to engage with communities and create critical environmental awareness by highlighting the predicament of an endemic species: the charming, entertaining, unique and very dear African penguin.
The species population has been staggeringly reduced since the 1800’s. Ongoing threats such as egg collection, guano scraping, over fishing, predation, pollution and basic human ignorance have all contributed to their current conservation status of ENDANGERED. Realistically this means that extinction within the next decade is a harsh reality.
While most people were understandably focusing on all the bad events surrounding this penguin, the AKA (Animal Keepers of Africa) was busy creating the Penguin Promises campaign. Uniquely this campaign is NOT a fund raiser and, as the time for awareness alone is long gone, rather empowers each person to take action on behalf of the planet to make an real difference by being involved on a daily basis in whichever way is most practical/doable for that individual. Many people + small actions = big change
If you work for an environmental organisation you may even like to be their representative on this entirely, primarily Old Mutual Finance, sponsored week.
Absolutely anyone may apply. Please submit a concise motivation to info@penguinpromises.com telling us a bit about yourself and what you feel you would contribute to the team for this week and to the campaign as a whole.
