Farmers in the drought-stricken North West province and the Northern Cape are to receive a lifeline of over 2,000 tons of cattle feed.
Bales of hay and large bags of grain are being transported onto trains destined for Kimberley and Vryburg.
The drought has left farmers desperate as they watch their herds suffer, but now their colleagues in the Western Cape have come to the rescue, donating 2 300 tons of feed.
“In the Northern Cape and the North West Province there is really a severe drought and the farmers in the Western Cape approached me and said to me we want to help. We have a lot of hay here available and as good neighbours we want to help them as well,” said Agriculture MEC Gerrit van Rensburg.
Animal feed a drop in the ocean
Van Rensburg admitted that the animal feed is but a drop in the ocean, but said he hopes it will provide some relief in the drought stricken areas.
“There’s a lot of hungry animals there and I believe this is very good hay. We have oats hay here as well as seredella and it will make a huge impact on the hungry animals that are waiting for this hay,” he said.
The consignment leaves Bellville station on Friday and is expected in Vryburg early next week.
