The sun's impending temper tantrum

In late January and again in the second week of March, the sun lashed out in a bit of a temper tantrum, on both occasions sending out a powerful interplanetary coronal mass ejection whose full effects reached Earth in a few days. We got lucky: Nothing much happened, and the resulting space weather storm didn’t pack as big a punch as expected.

Elma Pollard - Editor & Founder

Elma switched on to the precarious future of the planet in 1990, when she crafted her first green column "Nurturing Nature" in the Eikestadnuus newspaper in Stellenbosch, coupled with various social/environmental initiatives in the area. She worked in community empowerment and adaptation, followed by corporate and environmental training and coaching. In 2003 she was asked to do a second green column, this time "Living Green" in the Bolander newspaper, before launching the Green Times dedicated green newspaper in December 2008. Elma now runs the Green Times, trains eco journalists and, time permitting, writes stories - see here.

Save the Rhinos!

The rhino is being hunted into extinction and could disappear forever unless we act now. Shocking new statistics show more than 440 rhinos were brutally killed last year in South Africa alone - a massive increase on five years ago when just 13 had their horns hacked off.

If you’re not passionate about the earth, don’t bother to do the 5 hour trip from Cape Town to Forest Edge along the Knysna forest. Although it is a multi-award-winning resort with very well equipped and serviced cottages, this is ultimately a Nature Lovers’ Retreat.
