A responsible supermarket will be making a sizeable donation to Food and Trees for Africa, in support of Arbor Day and Arbor Month, starting 1 September.
Pick n Pay will be donating 1 million smart shopper points to them. Pick n Pay have been partnering with FTFA for more than 10 years, planting thousands of trees, developing food gardens, as well as being the sponsor of the Youth Category in the Climate Change Leadership Awards and the Climate Tree, a large wire boabab on which people can make their pledges to lowering their carbon footprint, by contributing a leaf to the tree.
This arbor month, a variety of tree saplings will be available in selected Pick n Pay stores and customers will be able to buy a half-metre sapling of either “Cape Ash” , ”Forest Bushwillow” or the “River Bushwillow”. A social media campaign will also allow customers to become ‘online tree planters’. By visiting the Pick n Pay Facebook page and ‘sharing’ with other facebook friends, Pick n Pay will plant a tree in partnership with Food and Trees for Africa for every 10 shares.
20 000 trees and counting
Bronwen Rohland (pictured), Director of Marketing and Sustainability at Pick n Pay, said, “We are very proud of our relationship with Food and Trees for Africa and, through our partnership with them, have planted more than twenty thousand trees. Our Facebook campaign will allow our growing online community to be part of Pick n Pay’s support of Arbor Month. By donating 1 million Smart Shopper points to Food and Trees for Africa, we are not only encouraging our employees and customers to also plant trees and start food gardens, we are helping our country grow a greener future.”
