GMOs in South Africa 23 years on: failures, biodiversity loss and escalating hunger

This global pandemic foreshadows an uncertain future of possible ecological collapse, pointing to the imbalanced relationship between humans and our life-supporting systems. South Africans are at great risk – pre-pandemic, one in four people went to bed hungry – and this is exacerbated by the current crisis, with one million jobs lost already and millions more people forced into hunger.

Despite industrial agricultural expansion’s impact on biodiversity loss and ecological destruction, driving further inequalities and putting the future of human civilisation at risk, we see a persistent and re-surged momentum at the heart of the false solutions being offered, to which genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are an integral part.

It is vital, at this pivotal moment in history, that we shift the trajectory, by phasing out industrial agriculture and transitioning towards a just and ecologically sound agricultural and food system. This paper gives an update of activities and increased concerns since South Africa first approved the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crops before the turn of the millennium. A prescient overview indeed.

Here is a summary of activities and concerns since SA 1st approved GM crops in late 1990s. https://bit.ly/30tTHvg
