Contaminated water ruled out for diarrhea in Durban

KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Sibongiseni Dlomo says contaminated water and infant formula are not the cause of the diarrhea outbreak that resulted in the death of 30 infants at three Durban hospitals. The deaths occurred between May and June and more than 1700 children have since been seen by various medical facilities. About 22 of the deaths were reported at Prince Mshiyeni … [Read more...]

Grow your own food step 4: Veggie planting & managing pests

Our next garden lesson involves the planning and planting of your seedlings, in your veggie beds. Just to revise… some plants that are not suitable to transplant are: carrots, radish, beetroot, peas, beans, corn, pumpkin, melons & butternut. These are generally to be planted straight into the veggie beds. Veggies suitable to be transplanted from a seed box or tray are … [Read more...]

Catching ‘cereal killers’ in the quest for safer food

Detecting infected maize early can help prevent contaminated crops from entering the food chain, and also reduce the risk of throat cancer linked to the consumption of infected maize products. In a recent study a specialised camera was used to produce chemical images of maize kernels infected with fungi that pose a threat to human and animal health. Through a process called … [Read more...]

Climate change set to exacerbate child vulnerability in SA

A new study is calling for policy makers to focus on children in addressing climate change. Climate change will exacerbate the existing vulnerabilities of kids in South Africa, unless mitigation and adaptation strategies are child-sensitive and timeously implemented. ‘Exploring the Impact of Climate Change on Children in South Africa,’ a study recently made public, … [Read more...]

How do heat waves affect our bodies?

Some might like it hot, but extreme heat can overpower the human body. An expert from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains how heat kills and why fans are worthless in the face of truly high temperatures. Climate change promises to bring with it longer, hotter summers to many places on the planet. With more heat waves on the horizon, the risk of … [Read more...]

Turn tap water into clean drinking water

On average you should be drinking at least two litres of water per day, enabling your body to flush out all the waste products. By not doing this you are putting your health and that of your family at risk. But let’s be honest: who wants to drink two litres of bad tasting tap water each and every day? Now great tasting healthy water (a 90% improvement in quality) is right … [Read more...]

Light heals at a cellular level

How our physical body is able to initiate and complete its own healing is one of its most remarkable features. Even a simple finger cut initiates responses from dozens of types of cells – the smallest units in our body – coordinated to achieve specific results, such as stopping blood loss, killing foreign bacteria and preventing infection, creating new blood capillaries, … [Read more...]

Saving the world with mushrooms

There are many ways in which mycelium fungus can help save the universe: cleaning polluted soil, making insecticides, treating smallpox and even flu. Entrepreneurial mycologist Paul Stamets seeks to rescue the study of mushrooms from forest gourmets and psychedelic warlords. The focus of Stamets' research is the Northwest's native fungal genome, mycelium, but along the way … [Read more...]
