The Bele Bele municipality in Limpopo is in the process of determining the costs after the province experienced severe rains.
According to the SABC most of the damage affected the Klein Kariba holiday venue and it was reported that an elderly couple was swept away and subsequently drowned.
An Eskom power plant was also damaged and electricity that had been cut has now been restored. Several houses and the city’s industrial sector were also severely affected.
Matome Sebelebele, a spokesperson for the municipality, told media outlets that things are in the process of getting back to normal.
Limpopo authorities last week during heaving rains recorded 180mm of torrential rain in about an hour. A resort was flooded due to two dams bursting its banks.
Dr Wim de Wet, the Klein Kariba resort’s manager says that that the resort is still unreachable and that the area is so muddy nothing can be done as it stands.
On Sunday the body of Eliza Parrow, a 74-year-old woman was recovered after she was swept away in the Klein Kariba flood.
The Limpopo river flooded the Groblerbridge when its banks burst, as a result truck drivers have been stranded and are currently waiting for the water levels to decrease. In addition the river flooded several controlled areas, vehicles and buildings.
Communities were also evacuated after their RDP houses were flooded and many are demanding to be moved to a more safe area. The people are currently living in a flood line that is extremely close to the Lephalale river.
Every time there are severe rains various communities are affected.
